The ALMaQUEST Survey X: what powers merger induced star formation?

نویسندگان

چکیده

Galaxy mergers are known to trigger both extended and central star formation. However, what remains be understood is whether this triggered formation facilitated by enhanced efficiencies, or an abundance of molecular gas fuel. This work presents spatially resolved measurements CO emission collected with the Atacama Large Millimetre Array (ALMA) for 20 merging galaxies (either pairs post-mergers) selected from Mapping Nearby Galaxies at Apache Point Observatory (MaNGA) survey. Eleven additional ALMA MaNGA QUEnching STar (ALMaQUEST) survey, resulting in a set 31 various stages interaction covering broad range rates (SFR). We investigate galaxy-to-galaxy variations Kennicutt-Schmidt relation (rKS: $\Sigma_{H_2}$ vs. $\Sigma_{SFR}$), main sequence (rMGMS: $\Sigma_{\star}$ $\Sigma_{H_2}$), star-forming (rSFMS: $\Sigma_{SFR}$). quantify offsets these relations determine if rate, fraction, and/or efficiency (SFE) different regions individual galaxy. By comparing all three parameters we can discern fraction SFE powers $\Sigma_{SFR}$. find that merger-induced driven variety mechanisms, within galaxy between mergers, regardless stage.

The Relation between Quasar and Merging Galaxy Luminosity Functions and the Merger-induced Star Formation Rate of the Universe

Using a model for the self-regulated growth of supermassive black holes in mergers involving gas-rich galaxies, we study the relationship between quasars and the population of merging galaxies and, as a consequence, predict the merger-induced star formation rate density of the Universe. These mergers drive nuclear inflows of gas, fueling starbursts and “buried” quasar activity until feedback en...

Ultraluminous X–ray Sources and Star Formation

Chandra observations of the Cartwheel galaxy reveal a population of ultraluminous X–ray sources (ULXs) with lifetimes <∼ 10 7 yr associated with a spreading wave of star formation which began some 3 × 10 yr ago. A population of high–mass X–ray binaries provides a simple model: donor stars of initial masses M2 >∼ 15M⊙ transfer mass on their thermal timescales to black holes of masses M1 >∼ 10M⊙....

On the formation of star clusters in the merger NGC 6240

We identified star clusters in archived HST/WFPC2 images of the merger and ultra-luminous infrared galaxy NGC 6240, with the aim of investigating whether star cluster properties (luminosity, age and mass) in such an extreme environment differ from those of clusters in less luminous starburst galaxies. We found 54 star clusters in all of the F450W, F547M and F814W exposures, of which 41 are loca...

On the star-formation rate - brightest cluster relation: estimating the peak SFR in post-merger galaxies

We further the recent discussion on the relation between the star-formation rate (SFR) of a galaxy and the luminosity of its brightest star-cluster (SFR vs. M V ). We first show that the observed trend between SFR vs. M V is due to the brightest cluster in a galaxy being preferentially young (6 15 Myr for a constant SFR) and hence a good tracer of the current SFR, although we give notable excep...

What Controls the Star Formation in Luminous Starburst Mergers ?

In order to understand what controls the star formation process in luminous starburst mergers (e.g., NGC 6240, Arp 220, and so on), we investigate observational properties of two samples of high-luminosity starburst galaxies mapped in CO(J=1–0) independently using both the Owens Valley Radio Observatory (Scoville et al. 1991) and the IRAM interferometer (Downes & Solomon 1998). We find that the...
